The Telegraph’s analysis of tax receipts showed that the top 1 per cent of income earners now pay 27 per cent of all income tax collected by the government as compared with just 11 per cent in 1976. The top 10 per cent of income earners account for twice as much tax as they did in the 1970s and their share of total tax paid rose from 35 per cent in 1976 to 59 per cent today. The Telegraph says its poll show only four in ten voters now consider the Conservatives a ‘low tax’ party.
